Nepal’s women’s football team celebrated a decisive victory in their opening match of the WAFF Women’s Championship, defeating Syria with a commanding 4-1 score. The match was held Tuesday evening at King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia.
Amisha Karki ignited Nepal’s scoring in the 10th minute, followed swiftly by Anita Basnet’s stunning goal off a corner three minutes later. Star forward Sabitra Bhandari extended Nepal’s lead in the 19th minute, putting the team ahead 3-0. Syria managed a single goal in the 42nd minute, but Nepal sealed their dominance with Rekha Poudel’s strike in the 69th minute.
This marks Nepal’s first participation in the prestigious West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship, a testament to the growing prominence of Asian football in the Middle East. Nepal received a special invitation to compete in the tournament.
Nepal will face Iraq on February 22nd and Palestine on February 24th. With both teams considered less formidable than Nepal, the strong start bodes well for the team’s continued success in the tournament.
